Family ski holidays 2026/27

The best family ski resort is the one that makes mornings easier.

For a family trip, I'd take a five-minute walk to ski school over another 100 km of pistes every time.

👶 Childcare and age limits

Childcare can be the difference between a relaxing week and a complicated one. Check the exact ages, dates and booking rules before you pay.

🎿 Ski-school logistics

A good ski-school meeting point should be easy to reach in ski boots, with gentle terrain nearby for the next stage of learning.

🏠 Family room layout

Room layout matters. A sensible apartment or connecting rooms can be worth more than a fancier hotel with an awkward morning walk.

🗺️ Terrain for everyone

You need enough easy terrain for learners, but not so little variety that older children are bored by day three.

Package inclusions

What can a family ski holiday package include?

Headline package prices rarely tell the whole story. Put the same room setup, dates, passes, hire and lessons side by side before deciding what's actually cheaper.

Travel

Flights, rail or self-drive may be included or arranged separately.

Transfers

Check journey time, child-seat arrangements and whether the resort transfer is included.

Accommodation

Compare family rooms, apartments, board basis and the distance to lifts and ski school.

Childcare

Childcare may be provider-run, resort-run or unavailable. Check ages and availability before booking.

Ski extras

Lift passes, hire and lessons may be included, discounted or priced separately.

Planning a family ski holiday

Sort the family logistics before chasing the cheapest price.

I'd happily trade a few piste kilometres for an easier morning with children. The cheap room stops feeling cheap if every day starts with a long walk in ski boots.

  1. 01

Check child ages and childcare rules

Minimum ages, session lengths and booking conditions differ between nurseries, clubs and ski schools.

  2. 02

    Map the daily route

Put the accommodation, ski-school meeting point and main lift on the same map before booking.

  3. 03

    Compare lesson times

Check start days, collection times and whether lessons work with childcare or adult ski plans.

  4. 04

    Check rooms and board basis

Connecting rooms, kitchens, early meals and half-board can change how easy the week feels.

  5. 05

    Price every age correctly

Lift-pass, lesson and equipment prices use different child age bands, so compare the full family total.

  6. 06

    Book peak-week extras early

School-holiday ski school, childcare and preferred family rooms can fill before the resort itself sells out.

Which family trip are you planning?

Match the resort to your children’s ages and skiing ability.

A family with a toddler needs different logistics from a family of confident teenagers.

ToddlersChildcare-led trips

If childcare is central to the trip, we'd start with Méribel, Flaine and El Tarter, then check the current childcare included with individual Tignes properties or tour operators.

First turnsBeginner-focused families

For first turns, La Plagne, Avoriaz, Corvara and Passo Tonale are the four we'd look at first.

Older childrenMixed-ability and teenage groups

Once the children can cover distance confidently, Tignes, Les Arcs, Méribel and Grandvalira make more sense because there is far more terrain to explore.

Choosing a family ski resort

Choose convenience before a giant piste map.

My rule for a family booking would be simple: get the village and accommodation right first, then worry about how many kilometres are on the piste map.

Toddlers

Prioritise childcare availability, short walks, flexible meals and an easy handover between parents.

Beginners

Look for nursery slopes, gentle progression runs and ski-school meeting points close to the main base.

Teenagers

Larger linked areas, fun zones and terrain variety become more useful as children ski independently.

Multi-generational groups

Compare mixed-ability terrain, pedestrian access, restaurants and non-ski activities as well as the slopes.

Trav's Top Tip: Put your accommodation, ski-school meeting point and main lift on the same map before booking. A family-friendly resort can still be awkward if those three are far apart.

Family ski holiday FAQs

Family ski holiday FAQs.

Quick answers about childcare, ski-school ages, family passes and what to compare.

Which ski resorts are good for families?

I'd start with La Plagne, Avoriaz, Les Arcs, Flaine, Gurgl, Corvara, Passo Tonale and El Tarter. The final choice should come down to your children's ages and the daily route between the accommodation, ski school and lifts, not just the size of the ski area.

Which ski resorts offer childcare?

Childcare changes by resort, property and week. Grandvalira currently lists nurseries in El Tarter, Soldeu, Canillo and Grau Roig, while Méribel lists Les Saturnins daycare from 18 months. Tour-operator childcare is more changeable, so check the exact property, ages and dates before booking.

What age can children start skiing?

There isn't one universal starting age. Around three is common for introductory ski programmes, but minimum ages and session styles vary. Check the individual ski school rather than assuming every resort works the same way.

Should families book school-holiday ski trips early?

Usually, yes. If you're tied to school-holiday dates and need a particular room layout, childcare or lesson time, I'd book those constraints earlier rather than gambling on a late saving.

Are family ski passes cheaper?

Sometimes. Resorts use different child age bands and family deals. Tignes currently gives free Tignes–Val d'Isère passes to children under 8, while other resorts use child rates or family formulas. Check the rules for your exact dates.

What should I compare in a family ski holiday price?

Price the whole week: travel, transfers, the room or apartment, food, passes, hire, lessons and childcare. Then look at the daily route to ski school and the main lift. A slightly dearer package can be the better family buy if it removes a lot of morning hassle.

Our methodology

How we choose family ski holidays and order providers.

We look at the resort first, then at what each provider actually adds for families.

01 · Research

We start with the things families use every day.

We check official resort, lift-company and tourism sources for ski-area size, beginner terrain, childcare, children's areas and family services.

02 · Rank

Family practicality comes first.

All 24 providers in our master comparison are included. Providers move up when they combine strong family products with childcare or clear childcare guidance, family-suitable accommodation, package simplicity, broad resort choice and good overall value. Luxury and specialist options stay included where they remain useful to families. Commission does not decide the order.

03 · Verify

We recheck the details that change fastest.

Childcare, ski-school ages, room layouts and family offers can change by property, date and booking market, so these are the details worth checking again just before payment.

What the order means

The order is editorial and specific to family ski holidays. Crystal Ski, Neilson and Mark Warner rank highest because they publish especially strong family and childcare propositions. Skiworld, Sunweb, Inghams and SnowTrex follow for family-focused packages, accommodation choice, practical guidance and value. Broader holiday, accommodation and luxury providers remain included after them, followed by transfers, equipment hire and lesson services. The order is not based on affiliate commission or a live cheapest-price calculation, and inclusion does not mean every provider runs childcare or serves every booking market.
