What many people don’t realise before booking Tignes is that it isn’t one compact resort centre. It is spread across five villages, from Les Brévières at 1,550 m to Val Claret at 2,150 m, and where you stay changes which lifts you use, how you get around and how easy it is to reach ski school and local services. This guide explains how the villages fit together, how to get to Tignes and move around once you are there, plus the published 2026/27 opening dates, ski-pass prices and beginner areas.
How Tignes fits together
Three upper neighbourhoods share the Tignes 2100 shuttle circuit. Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières sit further down the valley, with different bus connections and lift access.
One ski area, different places to stay
Le Lavachet, Le Lac and Val Claret form the upper resort at roughly 2,050–2,150 m. Tignes 1800 is below them at 1,800 m, while Les Brévières is at 1,550 m beneath the dam. The villages share mountain access, but the practical journey from your front door to a lesson, lift or restaurant varies considerably.

The best base depends on whether you prioritise a busy centre, quieter evenings, family facilities or straightforward access to your first lift.

The upper three bases are only 100 vertical metres apart. Les Brévières lies 500–600 metres below them, which matters for late-season snow conditions and getting around without skis.

Tignes free shuttle buses, explained
Three local circuits connect the resort. The diagram shows the connections between village areas; it is a route guide, not a street map or a timetable.
Early-season detail: The currently published 2026 timetable for the Les Brévières circuit begins on 28 November, while the upper Tignes 2100 circuit has services listed from earlier in November. Check the correct dates and route before relying on a free bus for a November stay.

The Tignes–Val d’Isère area has about 300 km of marked runs. Its size is useful only if you know which lifts will bring you back to your own village.
Nine free beginner lifts
The official progression zones have four carpets, two drag lifts and three chairlifts. They are spread across different village sectors; check which one your lessons use.
Choose the correct lift-pass area
A Tignes-only pass does not provide the same access as the linked Tignes–Val d’Isère pass. Check your planned runs before buying.
Watch the last connections
Weather can interrupt higher lifts. Before skiing into another sector, identify your return lifts and use live status rather than a static piste map.
First turns
Use a suitable free carpet or drag lift in your lesson area. Free access does not replace instruction.
Longer beginner runs
Progress to designated free chairlifts, including Bollin, Almes or Rosset where appropriate.

Purchase the pass that covers your planned lifts and ski only terrain appropriate to your level.
Off-piste terrain has different hazards and is not secured like marked pistes. Check the avalanche bulletin, carry the appropriate safety equipment and seek qualified guidance when needed.
How to get to Tignes by train, bus, plane or car
Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the nearest rail terminus. The final journey climbs to the resort by road, so the exact village stop matters.
Arrive at the valley's railway terminus.
Continue up the valley by coach, taxi or private vehicle.
Confirm the final stop against the accommodation address.
Rail plus S83
The S83 service runs from Bourg-Saint-Maurice towards Les Brévières, Tignes 1800, Le Lac and Val Claret. Confirm winter departure times, availability and your stop before travelling.
Four main airports
Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble and Chambéry serve the region. A further coach or private transfer is needed; winter traffic and flight arrival times can affect the total journey.
Follow the winter route
Travel via Bourg-Saint-Maurice and the D902. High mountain passes can close in winter. Check road conditions and French winter-equipment rules; parking in Tignes is chargeable in winter.

Tignes ski season 2026/27: important dates
The official season runs from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, but not every sector is scheduled to open at once.

Opening is progressive and remains subject to snow, weather and lift operations. The published resort dates do not mean every piste will be open throughout.
Opening week
Tignes opens gradually, including the Grande Motte sector where conditions allow. The published one-day Tignes-area pass is €50.
Linked-area preview
Connections with Val d’Isère are scheduled to begin opening. Reduced early-season ski-pass tariffs apply.
Main winter tariff period
The standard 2026/27 tariffs apply. Actual piste and lift openings still depend on conditions.
Closing period
Reduced tariffs return. Check which village returns and cross-resort links remain operating.
Tignes ski-pass prices for 2026/27
These are official published standard rates, not deals or booking offers. Prices depend on the date, duration, age band and whether you need Val d’Isère access.
Suitable if your planned lifts and runs are entirely within Tignes. Check the pass validity before buying.

Planning Tignes with children or non-skiers
The difference between a pleasant morning and a rushed one often comes down to the meeting point, walking route and bus circuit.
Before your first ski-school lesson
Check the exact school meeting location, not simply the village name. Free beginner lifts exist in several parts of Tignes, but lesson groups do not necessarily start at the lift nearest your accommodation.

When someone is not skiing
Le Lac has the Lagon aquatic centre and Tignespace sports facilities. Winter activities may include sledging and snowshoeing, subject to local conditions and operator schedules.
