Val Thorens Ski Resort Guide 2026/27

The thing that catches people out in Val Thorens is that there are two different maps to understand. The resort itself is compact and split into six districts, but once you are skiing you are choosing between the 150 km Val Thorens–Orelle area and the 600 km Les 3 Vallées network. That difference affects where you stay, which lifts you use and how far you can travel on skis; this guide also covers Moûtiers transfers, local buses, beginner areas and the published 2026/27 opening dates and ski-pass prices.

Resort layout

Val Thorens resort layout: six districts in one high-altitude resort.

Val Thorens is not split into separate villages. Grande Rue, Soleil, Slalom, Lombarde, Balcons and Plein Sud are districts within the same resort. The bigger divide appears on the mountain: Val Thorens–Orelle has 150 km of pistes, while the full Les 3 Vallées network reaches 600 km and does not operate for the whole Val Thorens season.

One resort, six districts

Grande Rue, Soleil, Slalom, Lombarde, Balcons and Plein Sud are all part of the same compact, semi-pedestrian resort. Grande Rue contains many shops, restaurants and resort services; the other districts sit around it at different points on the slope.

On the piste map, Val Thorens–Orelle is the 150 km area around the resort and Orelle. The ski links towards Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel take you into the wider Les 3 Vallées network when those connections are open.

Where to stay in Val Thorens: Grande Rue, Soleil, Slalom, Lombarde, Balcons or Plein Sud?

The six district names appear on resort signs and maps. Day to day, what matters is where your building sits in relation to the centre, the nearest slope, ski-school areas and the shuttle route.

Grande Rue

Grande Rue is the main central district, with a concentration of shops, restaurants and resort services. It is also where much of the evening activity is centred.

Val Thorens buses and walking: resort shuttles and Belleville Valley links.

Val Thorens is compact enough for many journeys on foot, but the resort is not flat. The free winter shuttle is useful for steeper or longer trips across the resort, while a separate Belleville Valley service connects Val Thorens with Les Menuires and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville on its published operating days.

The in-resort shuttle runs around Val Thorens in winter. Separate shuttles serve P3, P4 and P5 when those outer car parks are used for weekly parking, and the Belleville Valley service runs down to Les Menuires and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville.

Reading the ski area

Val Thorens piste map: local lifts, Les 3 Vallées links and beginner areas.

Around Val Thorens, the local network covers 150 km with Orelle. The links out towards Les Menuires take you into the 600 km Les 3 Vallées domain. Complete beginners start closer to the resort on the free carpets before moving onto the EasyRider progression areas.

The local Val Thorens–Orelle area covers about 150 km of pistes. A local pass stays within this sector rather than opening the full cross-valley network.

Getting to Val Thorens

How to get to Val Thorens: Moûtiers, airport transfers and driving.

Moûtiers–Salins–Brides-les-Bains is the nearest railway station, 37 km below Val Thorens. From there the S63 coach, taxis and VTCs continue up the Belleville Valley; airport arrivals also need a road transfer for the final stage.

Moûtiers–Salins–Brides-les-Bains is the closest station. From there, continue to Val Thorens by scheduled coach, taxi, VTC or car.

Moûtiers transfers

The S63 line connects Moûtiers station with the Val Thorens bus station at Place des Arolles. Taxis and VTC transfers are alternatives.

Driving to Val Thorens

Approach through the Tarentaise: from Albertville take the N90 towards Moûtiers, then follow signs for Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Les Menuires and Val Thorens.

The main regional airports are Chambéry, Grenoble, Lyon and Geneva. Transfer availability varies by airport and travel date.

Arrival point: scheduled coaches and many road transfers use the Val Thorens bus station at Place des Arolles. Go Val Thorens can combine rail, air and onward road options for the full journey.

2026/27 opening dates

Val Thorens ski season 2026/27: Val Thorens–Orelle and Les 3 Vallées dates.

The local Val Thorens–Orelle season runs from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. The full Les 3 Vallées links run from 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, so early- and late-season visitors have a smaller connected area.

Val Thorens ski-pass prices 2026/27: Val Thorens–Orelle and Les 3 Vallées.

The table below shows the published Les 3 Vallées prices for the main 2026/27 period from 19 December. Val Thorens–Orelle passes are sold separately for the 150 km local area, so the two products should not be confused when looking at prices.

Families can pay the child rate

For qualifying groups of at least three people and passes of 5 days or more, Family Flex lets the whole family pay the child rate. The group can include up to two adults and must include at least one child aged 5–17.

The 6-day adult pass is €378.90 from 5–18 December and again from 10–18 April, compared with €421 in the main period.

Children

Under 5s ski free

Children under five receive a free Les 3 Vallées pass. A free pass still needs to be collected with proof of age and a recent photo.

Family logistics & days off skis

Val Thorens for families: ski school, childcare and non-ski days.

Val Thorens holds the Famille Plus label and has several ski schools, childcare options and beginner facilities. Meeting points are spread around the resort, so it is worth locating the exact ski-school or childcare address before the first morning.

Children’s gardens and ski-school facilities are spread around the resort, with several services on the Soleil side. Starting ages and meeting points vary by school, so use the school’s own location rather than a general resort marker.

Official winter activities include snowshoeing, sledging, dog sledding and indoor facilities at Le Board, whose spaces include a swimming pool, wellness areas, sports facilities and Fun Park.
