Skiresort.com's current worldwide directory places Germany first. the United States comes second and Japan third, followed by Austria and China. The directory is broad enough to include many small local ski hills as well as destination resorts.
Number one by listed ski-resort count
Germany's total is not a count of 627 large Alpine destinations. Hundreds of the entries are compact local areas, including small lift operations outside the German Alps.

Germany leads because it has hundreds of small local ski areas
The German total is spread far beyond famous Alpine resorts. Skiresort.com lists 245 areas in Bavaria, 173 in Baden-Württemberg, 64 in Saxony and 50 in North Rhine-Westphalia. It also counts ski areas in the Black Forest, central German uplands, Swabian Jura and other lower mountain regions.
That explains why the country can have more individual listings than destinations that feel much bigger to holiday skiers. Germany's directory total covers about 1,280 km of pistes; the United States has fewer listed ski areas than Germany, yet considerably more piste kilometres in this directory.

A stricter definition can put the United States first
There is no universal rule for what must qualify as a ski resort. A single local lift, a small municipal hill and a large destination with dozens of lifts can all appear in a broad directory, while an industry report may set a minimum size.
Why Laurent Vanat's ranking looks different
Vanat's 2022 International Report on Snow & Mountain Tourism identified 5,764 outdoor ski areas worldwide, then used a threshold of more than four lifts to define 1,945 of them as ski resorts for its industry comparison.
With that filter, the United States ranked first, followed by France and Italy. The report specifically noted that Germany has many ski areas, but that most are very small and therefore fall outside its resort definition.
The 2026 Vanat report covers 68 countries with lift-served ski areas, but its full country tables are not freely published. The directory counts above and Vanat’s 2022 country ranking use different definitions and should not be compared as though they count identical types of resort.

More ski resorts does not mean a bigger or busier ski market
Resort count measures how many separate places are listed. It does not measure the size of those places, their lift capacity, skier visits, piste kilometres or international importance. Germany is a good example: its broad count is huge because of local areas, while other countries concentrate much more terrain into fewer destinations.
